Celebrating 50 Years of River Park Square: A Downtown Spokane Landmark

Locally owned River Park Square has been a key part of downtown Spokane since opening on May 1, 1974, just days before EXPO '74. It quickly became a community hub, growing alongside the city.

In 1978, the center expanded with a 55,000-square-foot second level and skywalks, connecting to major stores like JCPenney and Nordstrom. By the 1980s, River Park Square had grown significantly, with major department stores such as The Crescent and The Bon Marché anchoring Spokane's retail scene.

By the late 1980s and early 1990s, retail trends were shifting, and the center needed to adapt. A revitalization plan in the mid-1990s led to an extensive renovation, which debuted in 1999. The centerpiece was the iconic 80-foot glass atrium, which remains a favorite gathering spot, especially during the holidays with the glowing 50-foot Christmas tree.

As it celebrates 50 years, River Park Square remains a vibrant gathering place for shopping, dining, and entertainment. With key national tenants like Nordstrom, AMC Theatres, and Apple and local merchants including From Here, Whiz Kids and Twigs, River Park Square brings vitality to Downtown Spokane.
