The Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame was created by an act of the Louisiana Legislature in 1987. The museum is housed in the old Winnfield railroad depot that was donated to the city by the L&A Railroad and was moved to its present location on Main Street. The museum opened in August of 1993 on the anniversary of Huey P. Long's 100th birthday. You see, Winnfield is considered to be the birthplace of politics in Louisiana, for it is the home of three governors.
The museum has accumulated over 100,000 artifacts and memorabilia relating to politicians and politics in Louisiana. There are life-sized mannequins of the two famous brothers, Huey and Earl Long. Frequently you can hear recordings of the speeches made by both men being played as visitors look back into the political past of Winnfield. Each of the inductees into the Hall has his own display with a caricature drawn by famed political cartoonist Pap Dean, who is also a member of the Hall of Fame. Currently there are 120 inductees into the Political Hall of Fame.
