About
The Gillespie Golf Course is one of two golf facilities owned and operated by the City of Greensboro. The Gillespie Park area was named for Revolutionary War Colonel Daniel Gillespie (1743-1829), one of the city's founders. He fought for independence in the Battle of Alamance and Guilford Courthouse. There are no historical records of Col. Gillespie’s recreation interests, however, his ancestors came to America from the Scottish highlands, so one might wonder if golf was in his background.
Gillespie Golf Course opened in 1941 as a nine-holer on 80 acres of rolling hill-country within one mile of the center of the city, at the intersection of Florida Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. In 1991 major alterations produced an additional set of tees which now provides an opportunity to play the golf course as an 18-holer. With the possible exception of holes 1 and 10, there are no easy holes at Gillespie, while at the same time there are no unreasonably difficult holes either. Gillespie is simply a solid golf course providing a variety of golf holes to test the skills of all player levels.
Playing between 5,017 and 6,445 yards, the course features small greens, many of which require shots to be correctly placed for putting success. The main hazard is a tributary of the South Buffalo Creek, which meanders through the course, coming into play on eight holes. A mature tree canopy of oaks and native hardwoods along with 16 strategically placed bunkers put the finishing touches on this hidden gem in the Greensboro area.
