Posted on 03/24/22

AARP Pennsylvania hosted a virtual panel event on Wednesday, March 14th, 2022 with guest speakers Philadelphia Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson; Department of Records Commissioner James P. Leonard; and Philly VIP Staff Attorney Michael Jones; to inform community members about the issue of tangled titles.

Sixty AARP members and guests people participated in the event, which featured a lively chat. Among other highlights, Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson’s staff was participating in the chat and answered people’s questions in real time. They also started at least one process for helping out a guest who had an intricate problem regarding a tangled title.

Councilmember Gilmore Richardson (the youngest African American woman ever elected to City Council) also spoke about her personal experience with tangled titles, which occurred after her parents passed away and left her a home in the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia. It took several years to get the house in her own name and she used that experience, she said, to make sure others don’t have the same issues.

Philly VIP law firm representative Mike Jones prepared an informative slideshow for the event and answered all remaining questions in the chat during his presentation. Jones also continued answering guests’ questions after his presentation, including questions about helping neighbors currently involved in this predicament.

Tangled titles are a systemic problem that puts individuals and community wealth at risk. AARP Pennsylvania acknowledges the complications and the lengthy process untangling titles can be. This event provided insight the phenomenon and on recent legislation passed by Councilmember Gilmore Richardson and Philadelphia City Council that helps deliver a solution.

AARP Pennsylvania was pleased to provide Pennsylvanians with the opportunity to learn more about housing and tangled titles. If you missed the event, you may view it here:
