Shake Your Way to a Sharp Mind with AARP Orlando
Imagine this: infectious, Latin beats filling the air of Orlando's Beardall Senior Center, as dozens of older adults dance together, their laughter echoing across the dance floor. This was the exact vibe of our latest AARP Orlando event — our 2024 spring salsa dancing extravaganza designed to boost brain health for The City of Orlando's residents!
From newcomers to salsa pros, 139 adults came together to move, groove, and sharpen their brains. Joined by two instructors from Kenny Kings Music and a handful of our talented volunteers, participants learned basic steps on how to salsa — quickly clapping, cheering, and breaking into pairs to dance the day away.
We all know dancing is a great source of exercise...but how exactly does it improve our brain health? According to a recent report from the Global Council on Brain Health, moving to music uses all different parts of your brain like the sensory, motor and rewards center. And, Latin dancing — like salsa — actually has additional benefits like improved decision-making and visual recognition. Talk about a "step" in the right direction!
The energy of this event was so special that it's better to show than tell. Check out the video below, and make sure to visit aarp.org/Orlando to learn more about other events in your area!
