Improve Bathroom Safety: Prevent Slips and Falls

Posted on 05/09/24

Could your bathroom use a safety makeover?

As we age, everyday tasks can become difficult and even dangerous. One room that can be particularly perilous for daily tasks: the bathroom.

Bathrooms can pose risks

One of the most prevalent bathroom dangers is the risk of slips and falls. The combination of smooth, hard, and wet surfaces can turn a routine trip to the bathroom into a life-threatening situation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among older adults, with bathroom falls especially commonplace.

Tips to prevent slips and falls

Fortunately, there are steps that older adults and caregivers can take to minimize the many risks associated with bathrooms:

  • Slip-resistant flooring: Replace smooth flooring surfaces with non-slip alternatives, such as textured tiles or slip-resistant mats.
  • Grab bars and handrails: Install grab bars near the toilet, shower, and bathtub to provide stability and support for older adults when maneuvering in slippery conditions.
  • Lighting: A motion-sensor night-light provides safety lighting.
  • Shower and tub modifications: Bathing aids like shower chairs, nonslip strips or nonskid mats, and handheld showerheads can make bathing safer and more comfortable.
