Housing Law Could Bring More ADUs

Posted on 05/31/24 by The AARP Bulletin

A new state law, signed by Gov. Phil Murphy (D) in March, defines accessory dwelling units as affordable housing. ADUs are built on the same lot as a single-family home and include in-law suites, garage apartments and backyard cottages.

The law could increase the number of ADUs across the state, says Evelyn Liebman, AARP New Jersey’s director of advocacy, because such units will now count toward localities’ obligation to develop affordable housing.

AARP New Jersey supported the bill.
