The candidates vying to represent Virginia in the U.S. Senate will participate in two separate interactive telephone forums with AARP Virginia, sharing their views on issues affecting older Virginians and answering voters’ questions.

The forum featuring Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19. His challenger, Republican Hung Cao, will speak with the AARP audience at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24. AARP Virginia State Advocacy Director Jared Calfee will serve as moderator for both telephone forums.

AARP Virginia will call out to about 100,000 households that have agreed to receive calls from the organization. The same households will be called for each forum, and Calfee will ask both candidates questions on the same topics. Listeners will also be able to ask the candidates questions.

Both forums will be streamed live on the AARP Virginia Facebook page. Those listening to the live stream will be able to submit questions for the candidates in the comments, which will be relayed to the moderator.

Topics addressed during the forums will focus on issues that affect voters 50 and older and their families such as Social Security and caregiving.

“Candidates simply cannot win elections without talking about the issues important to voters age 50-plus and their families,” Calfee said. “They want to see politicians address their day-to-day challenges like caring for their loved ones and protecting their hard-earned Social Security.”
